Note from Tiger Auntie: Teaching Humanity During the Holiday Season
Holiday season for many children are about being showered with gifts and treats… Most parents have them write a letter to the Santa, make their wishlist, and some simply just ask. However, how many parents ask their children what they would like to share with those less fortunate than us?
Poverty is one of those difficult subjects to explain. When one of my nephews asked me why people lived on the streets while we were driving through the Skid Row area in Downtown Los Angeles, I didn’t have a simple answer for him. I told him that they are living on the streets because our society hasn’t found an efficient way to provide resources, assistance, services and economic-aid to those in need. It is our social service system’s failure to provide prevention to becoming homeless. I told him that most people rely on our government to provide aid when we need to show more humanity and roll-up our own sleeves to help. I told him that it is circumstances that usually bring people to live on the streets, and their character cannot be judged by where they sleep.
There is no simple answer to poverty and homelessness, but we do need to undo the propaganda the mainstream society has been spreading about poverty and homelessness. We need to teach our children that laziness and lack of motivation do not cause poverty and homelessness. We need to start planting seeds of humanity in our children. Our generation needs to educate so that the next generation can better… [+] to continue.
